Special note about Savage 21BB engine: Unfortunately, regardless of what power output is "claimed" for the stock Savage 21BB engine, the fact remains that it is not an extremely powerful .21 engine. It is made by Force company and is similar in design to the 4 port Force P4 engine. The Savage 21BB engine does have some design improvement over the P4, but from our own personal experience and the experience of other Savage owners, we know that while the 21BB is powerful - it is relatively mild as far as high performance .21 engines go. You can tell this just by driving a stock HPI Savage 21 truck. We've heard power claims for the stock 21BB engine ranging anywhere from 1.7HP to 2.3HP. In our opinion, 2.3HP sounds VERY OPTIMISTIC! If it were so powerful, then why does the T-MAXX 2.5 with only a .15 engine put the Savage 21 to shame?!?! In a recent comparison test in RC Nitro magazine (April 2003), the T-MAXX with only a .15 engine not only out accelerated the Savage 21 in a drag race, but the T-MAXX also beat it in the top speed department by around 10MPH! OUCH!

The Savage is a GREAT truck and we believe it is much more innovative and better than the T-MAXX 2.5 when evaluated as a whole. In our opinion (and the opinion of MANY others), the Savage 21 just needs more power. Fortunately, there are some very nice upgrade engines available to significantly increase the performance of the HPI Savage.

UPDATE: Thankfully the power situation has been greatly improved with the newest HPI Savage trucks. The new S-25 engine is probably the most exciting upgrade of the hpi savage 25 parts that have been upgraded! The Savage 25 and SS trucks now have the bigger displacement S-25 which offers better performance than the original 21BB engine. For those that still want more power than the rated 2.5 HP of the S-25, there is still the Picco 26 engine that offers incredible power for your hpi savage at a very reasonable cost!

HYPER 21 8 PORT ENGINE UPGRADE - This has been another one of the very popular hpi savage hop ups for the Savage 21 truck. The stock Savage 21BB engine puts out around 1.7 - 2.3 HP. The Hyper 21 8 Port is rated at a blistering 2.5HP and 38,000 RPM! The 8 port turbo design of this engines helps it flow more air at higher engine RPM's. This engine should produce maximum power higher in the engine RPM range than the stock Savage 21BB. Because of this, the Hyper 21 8 Port is an excellent choice for someone who wants increased top speed and power for their HPI Savage! The Hyper 21 8 port has some very advanced engine design features for a very low price. Why spend $300-400 on some Italian made engine with a fancy name, when you can get the ultra-high performance of the Hyper 21 8 Port for a fraction of the price! Don't forget the high performance clutch shoes to help harness all the extra power (see one of the other HPI Savage Parts pages). We've heard from a customer that installed a Hyper 21 8 Port in his Savage and ran against one of the fast, new 2.5 powered T-Maxx. The T-Maxx ate maximum dust as the Hyper 21 8 Port powered Savage left it way behind! The Hyper 21 8 Port engine is a great BANG FOR THE BUCK upgrade for your HPI Savage!

OFNA PICCO 26 OUTLAW ENGINE UPGRADE - The incredible 2.7HP Picco .26 Outlaw nitro engine is specifically designed for Monster Truck duty. The BIG .26 cu. in. (4.3 cc) engine displacement gives BIG POWER and TORQUE, while the Picco design also offers screamin' high RPM peak power performance. This is probably one of the single most popular hpi savage hop ups that we have seen! More POWER is almost always popular!

FORCE 25 UPGRADE ENGINE - How does MORE POWER & TORQUE sound?!?! The stock HPI Savage .21BB engine is powerful, but it is an entry level .21 engine that puts out around 1.7 - 2.3 HP. If you have the need for more power and speed, then this BIG engine is the one for you! The Force 25 is a BIG displacement big block nitro engine that produces lots of TORQUE at useful engine RPM's. This engine doesn't need to rev way up before it starts to produce some serious power. Because of it's design, this big displacement engine is well suited to big monster trucks like the HPI Savage. The big POWER and TORQUE of the Force 25 will give explosive acceleration and brute force climbing power. This engine offers a tremendous "bang for the buck" in HPI Savage performance!
